Matter's of Trust Released This New Video Showing "Traditional" Booms Versus Hair Booms to Aid in the Clean-up of the Gulf!

What I see is the Hair Booms work just as well, if not better than the "traditional" booms in soaking up the oil. And how did traditional booms get so popular anyway? We have never had an oil "spill" like this! I am now calling it the Gulf vomit! BP refused to use these but my question is WHY aren't the Parish Presidents like Billy Nungesser using these?

It seems people are worried about the Hair Booms buoyancy but, as my nephew pointed out, these could be pulled behind a boat in large nets in the open ocean, or attached to large poles and literally dipped in those parts of the marshes that can't be reached by boat. Driving a boat in these areas in impossible as the boat motors would destroy the wetlands we are trying to rescue. These look like a GREAT option to me!

People, listen up! If you insist on change, you must be willing to make it happen! Write to your local senators, the Whitehouse, EPA or the special committee that has been set up to study this mess! If you are in the affected states contact your LOCAL government folks, like Billy Nungesser. Urge them to use these Hair Booms! Make change happen!

We are now taking donations of hair; human and pet, and old pantyhose, tights, knee highs and even trouser socks to make Hair Booms to send to the Gulf regions.

Friendly Hair Collection Reminders:

Set aside a designated box (salons usually reuse a box in which shampoo was delivered) RECYCLING!

Line the box with a clean plastic garbage bag.

Ideally, shampoed hair is the best. We don't want to put more chemicals in the Gulf!

Any length of hair is fine, inlcuding clippings from your floor.

Every type of hair is fine (straight, curly, all colors, dyed, permed, straightened...) but only HEAD hair, please!

Sweep in all hair clippings, HAIR ONLY! Please remove all other garbage like gum, metal clips, paper cups, wrappers, etc.

When you are ready to ship or your box is full, please tie the top of the bag or secure with a rubberband or garbage bag tie and tape the box shut. Label your box with a small note that indicates if it is HUMAN or PET hair.

We also need those hosiery items! Please wash any dirty hose, even those with runs, and place in a seperate bag please. They can go in the same box but please put don't put them in the hair bag.

We will set a date for a Boom Making Party when we have enough hose and hair together to keep several volunteers busy. If you chose to do this in your area, it is very easy. You stuff the hosiery with clean hair and tie off the ends. That's it! Ship or take it to the nearest Gulf rescue organization of your choice.

Hair Stylists, Barbers, and Groomers have a unique opportunity to show the world just how much we care and how we can make a difference!

So, Get busy with it! Collect Hosiery and Hair and let's save the Gulf!

Barbers, Hairstylists and Professional Groomers, YOU Can Help Clean Up the Gulf Oil Spill COLLECT Hair Cuttings!

By now, I'm sure you have heard about the Gulf Oil Spill Crisis, and if you're like me, you are ANGRY! Rather than just reacting to the situation out of frustration, I am calling all of you wonderful Barbers, Hairstylists, and professional Groomers to ACTION! I also urge Cosmetology Schools and Barber Schools to join in this effort! Believe it or not WE can help in a unique way most citizens can't, so I am calling on you to do so now. Simply, collect the hair clippings from your shop, salon, spa, or school in a clean plastic bag and place in a recycled box. Make sure there is no garbage amongst the hair. I will give you details later on where to send the clippings but for now, start collecting!

"Alabama hairstylist Phil McCrory first stumbled upon the discovery of how well hair absorbs oil spills when he observed that fur on Alaskan otters was fully saturated with oil after the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill. After experiments to see how much oil he could sop up with hair clippings, he invented the hairmat to effectively clean up oil-spilled waters." Thank you to Stylelist.com "Matter of Trust is now raising funds to buy their own needlepunch machines in order to make the oil relief hair supplies at their California-based headquarters. The company says that doing so will also create many jobs and educational training for California citizens."

These Hair Matts have been used to aid in the clean-up of numerous oil spills and have been shown to be VERY effective.

Matter of Trust, a non-profit organization, Conceived in 1998, by Lisa Craig Gautier and her husband, Patrice Olivier Gautier collects these human and animal hair clippings and makes them into Hair Matts. These Hair Matts as shown in the above video, soak up the oil but releases the water, cleaning up the environment naturally. It is estimated that a hair salon can collect up to 5 pounds of human hair in one day so get your brooms, bags, and boxes ready for that hair and help the environment today!

Chemotherapy Sucks and Earthquakes Do Too!

Hi All! A brief explanation for why I haven't posted in a while . . . chemotherapy. I think that says it all so moving right along!

I would like to say a HUGE thanks to the December winners! Not only were they really cool about me getting around to notifying them; all three winners were gracious enough to donate their winnings to the poor folks in Haiti. Shears4Hair sent a package along with a local friend from Haiti and the shears and razors were actually used in medical facilities for hair removal.

I want to thank all of you for re-affirming my belief that Hairstylists, Barbers, and Professional Groomers are the BEST people in the world!

I Love Glee! Yep, I Said It!

GLEE was my secret addiction until now, I'm coming out! If you haven't seen Glee you should. Glee is chucked-full cool old music and great new music ripped straight from the charts and dancing. Glee is a musical, comedy/drama and well worth the one hour watch (45 minutes if you watch it on Fox via the link above.) It's a great show! I love it and yea I'm saying it!

Last night, the focus was on Artie, the male character in a wheelchair, who told his story of becoming a paraplegic at the age of eight in a car accident in which his mom escaped injury but he sadly didn't. And it was on Kurt, the gay singer that wanted to perform a traditionally female part.

One of the things I <3 about GLEE is it's MESSAGES! The messages in this episode were great: be true to yourself and handicaps are really handi-Cans. Being a supporter of the Performing Arts, I would love to see more schools with a "Glee" club.

Despite the controversy regarding the "wheelchair" episode I feel this show has alot of promise and GREAT messages. Fostering the Arts in our schools is sooooooooo important! Studies have shown that Music and Math are closely related and that Music can often help struggling students.

One example: PS22 in New York City, if your not familiar, click the link or look them up on YouTube; has taken music to an all new level for students. They have been recognized by multiple musicians and Hollywood stars for their beautiful performances of many songs. The kids have gained self confidence and have excelled! Why do these schools have to be the exception rather than the norm?

I know this post has nothing to do with hair but, as Artists, I think most Hairstylist, Barbers, and pro Groomers can understand the appeal of this show! I wish more schools would embrace the Arts and shhhhhhhh! Don't tell, but, I want hang out and sing and dance with these kids!

Saving Money With Tondeo Razor Blades, How To, & How to Figure Out Which Blade You Need

We sell various razors on our site but personally our fave is the Tondeo Sifter razor for a few reasons. PINKing UP Your Business During Breast Cancer Month, How to Help and Make Money Doing It

As you probably already know October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Your Spa, Salon, Shop and yes, even your Barber Shop can not only participate and help along with your community but you can also increase your sales by PINKing up. From the high end Spas to the corner Barbershop, you have influence and a means to help your community as well as the Breast Cancer Research or more directly individuals affected by Breast Cancer. Some suggestions are easy, no frill ways to help and others are more involved, but whatever you choose to do will make a difference. YOU are an important influence in your community. Don't underestimate how much impact YOU can have!

YOU = Information and Influence in Your Community

Who: The first step in planning should be deciding do you want to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research, an Individual, or an established Non-profit Organization or do you want to simply raise Breast Cancer Awareness? Either are GREAT!

When: Decide whether you are going to have a month long event, a few separate events, one event or any event at all.

Where: Make sure whatever you plan will fit in your space or prepare to look for a venue. Venues can be expensive but I have a tip for you. Securing a FREE venue can be easy by networking with fellow businesses like restaurants, health clubs, even local pubs. These types of areas can be FREE if you approach the owners with a plan that includes marketing for them. By "hosting" an event these businesses benefit as well.

Studies have shown that people when offered comparable products, will chose the one that is somehow "giving back" and the same line of thinking goes for locations. If Restaurant A is offering soup for $1.99 and Restaurant B is offering the same soup for $1.99 but, they are donating ten cents to the local food bank, consumers are much more likely to choose restraunt B because they like that warm, fuzzy feeling of somehow making a difference and supporting a cause.

What: This is much harder to define. Based on your decisions for "who", "when" and "where", you should now have a clear idea what your goal is. If it is to raise funds, then you must have decide how much you wish to raise and how you wish to obtain donations. If your goal is to raise awareness, then you should be guided by the prior "who", "when" and "where" and decide the How.

How: Here are some suggestions for you for both breast cancer fundraisers and breast cancer awareness campaigns. These are in no way the only things you can do, these are only suggestions and I would love to hear what YOU are doing to make a difference! Comments are most welcome.

She retails the Diane Foot Files for $5.00 Each and Donates all the Profits to the Susan G. Komen Organization, Where You Can Find More Ways You Can Help!

The National Cancer Institue has FREE publications that can be downloaded and printed directly from your computer or ordered and mailed to you for a small shipping fee. One Barber Shop I know added these pamphlets to their "waiting" chairs and vending areas, raising awareness.

National Women's Health Resource Center of The Healthy Women Organization Offers FREE Shower Hanger Cards to Promote Self Breast Exams. Bulk orders are FREE only charging a nominal fee for shipping/handling. One Spa gave EVERY customer (men and women) one of these in a Swag Bag of Pink Goodies.

The CDC also offers FREE Breast Cancer information and an E-Card that you can send to all your clients at no costs to you!

Ahead of Style Offered Pink hair extensions, pink polish, pink make-up and more at the Race for the Cure in their city.

Day Glow Health Spa is Donating $5.00 for Every Skin Care Service to the National Breast Cancer Foundation

Kal Cauthen, Celebrity Barber, Offers FREE Cuts to those with cancer and walked the walk for Breast Cancer.

The Look Good, Feel Better Charity in the UK has Stylists, Manicurists, Barbers and other beauty professionals that volunteer to give Breast Cancer patients make-overs that not only make them feel better but look good.

Hollywood Salon and Day Spa is selling raffle tickets for prizes donated by themselves and other businesses and holding a Cut-a-thon with ALL proceeds being used to help Breast Cancer Help Inc.

GROOMING FOR THE PINK CURE – Beverly Hills Dog will donate a portion of all pet grooming proceeds during the month of October to help find a cure for breast cancer. All groomed pets will receive a breast cancer awareness bandana; parents will receive a pink carnation. (I really love this!)

And finally, one aspiring Professional Pet Groomer said she was busy making Pink Breast Cancer Ribbons for the pooches as well as their owners to wear.

Public Relations: Don't forget to contact your local newspapers, radio stations and news teams. They love community service stories!

Dr. Sanjay Gupta Survived H1N1 Flu, and We Did Too! Make Sure You and Your Business Does!

This morning Sanjay Gupta, reported on his blog that he and his camera man, Scottie McWhinnie, got the H1N1 Influenza while reporting on the Afganistan war. He lived to talk about it and so have we! The symptoms he reported were very much like ours; chills and fever, body aches, terrible sinus congestion, a horrible cough, no appetite, and nausea.

What Dr Gupta and we ALL did is important! Pay attention here! We ALL took to bed and RESTED.

The best thing you can do if you get this Flu is to REST, increase your fluid intake, take Tylenol for fever reduction and pain, and perhaps a sinus decongestant. Before taking any medicines, first, check with your doctor. We voluntarily isolated ourselves to our beds at home. To tell you the truth, I don't think any of us could have worked even if we wanted too. But, out of respect for others, we voluntary quaranteened ourselves.

Should you begin having symptoms of the flu, whether it be H1N1 or the regular strains of Flu we see every year, the first thing you should do is hit the bed! Rest is imperitive! Dr Gupta reports he felt like he had "the flu" and we did too.

Do not attempt to plug along and work despite being sick. Your Client's will understand, in fact, many of ours were grateful that we were truthful and respected them enough not to expose them to it. It is best that you voluntarily remove yourself from the salon/spa/shop and stay at home in the bed. This way you get better faster and don't expose any of your co-workers or your valuable clients!

Salon Owners/Managers go ahead and have a plan. The best thing to tell your employees is to STAY at HOME if they feel sick. Have an alternate plan. If you have one stylist, barber or groomer out because of illness, assure them that you can reschedule their client's for them and that THEY NEED to STAY at HOME.

The Best Ways to Stop the Spread of the Flu in Your Shop, Salon, or Spa:

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze

If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands

Put your used tissue in the waste basket

Clean your hands after coughing or sneezing
Wash with soap and water

Clean with alcohol-based hand cleaner

If you are sick, STAY HOME

Shave for a Cure! Raise Funds to Combat Childhood Cancer!

We are excited and honored to be providing the Shears for the Stylists and Barbers who will be diligently working for FREE, cutting hair, and finally shaving heads for St. Baldrick's Foundation at Finnigan's Wake Pub and Kitchen in Winston-Salem, NC to Raise Funds for children stricken with Cancer.

St. Baldrick's Foundation is the largest volunteer fund-raising foundation for childhood cancer research. Volunteers with the help of professionals, shave their heads in show of support and solidarity of children with cancer. Pledges from friends, family and our community go to support research in the hopes that one day, childhood cancer will be a thing of the past!

This isn't the first time Finnigan's Wake of Winston-Salem has sponsored this event. They have raised thousands of dollars in the past. I recently had the honor of joining in a partnership with a well respected shear manufacturer and designing my own haircutting shear line for Hairstylist, Barbers, and Professional Groomers. After many prototypes passed through my hands, and some tweeking, I am happy to say that MY designs will be available soon! I am very excited about these and think you will be too.

My first goal was to bring new designs to the market, as unique and stylish as my Stylist, Barbers, and Pro Groomers. After all, it is you guys that set the trends so, it is important that you cut in style!

My second goal was to offer a great shear at a great price. I have accomplished that with my partners in Asia. What are Hair Tattoos or Tribal Hair Cutting?

The Hair Tattoo or Tribal cuts have been around for centuries, perhaps even longer. Think back to different times in history and I bet you can think of a Hair Style that coincides with it. For example, when I think of the Revolutionary War, I think of powdered white wigs like George Washington sported; a tidy whitey wig LOL. Anyways, if you are cutting men's hair as a stylist then you have probably have done a bit of easy hair tattooing. If you are a Barber, I know you are doing tribal cuts or giving hair tattoos, even if it is only a "part" line.

Hair Tattooing, Tribal Hair Cutting, is also sometimes called carving. Any Stylist or Barber that does it is a talented Artists. It requires imagination, talent, and mad skills to Hair Tattoo. The tools of choice are clippers and a razor for most Tribal designers. The best razor, hands down is the Tondeo Sifter Razor, sometimes referred to as the cut throat razor. Tondeo has even came out with a razor especially for Hair Tattooing, Tribal Styling, or carving, aptly called the Tondeo Tribal Razor.

The Hair Tattoo can be anything the customer wants and anything the barber or stylists can do. The imagination is the limit! Using hand drawn art, cartoons, tattoos, images, logos, or just their imagination, barbers and stylists have been transforming heads into Art! Customers range in age from 10-100, male and female alike have been seen sporting them, but the majority of the hair tattoos seen are on younger guys.

I think it's cool. The Art work these barbers and stylist alike have created, run the gamete from serious to outrageous! And, seriously, it is so much fun to see the guy in front of me at an Alabama Football game with a raging Elephant on the back of his head, and next to him his three sons with the words: ROLL TIDE ROLL carved into the back of their heads. I guess he has to make sure they sit and walk in order, Hehe!

It is a great way for stylist and barbers to showcase their Artistic talents and a great way for the client to make their statement! It is also a fun way to bring younger guys into your shop, and increase your earnings. The awesome thing about the Tondeo Sifter Razor and the Tondeo Tribal Razor is that the blades snap in half. So, if you order a box of 10 blades, you are really getting 20 blades and it is the same with the Tondeo blades in the boxes of 100, you are really getting 200. The blades all snap in half. Unlike the newer hair razors, the Tondeo razor blades cost less than $1.00 a piece. How is that for saving you money is your barber shop or salon? Pretty good? ShearsforHair thinks so.

ShearsforHair.com wishes to thank all our service guys and gals, past and present and their families for keeping America FREE and protecting our rights!

As a female business owner, I am grateful for my rights. I am grateful that I can speak out. I am grateful that I can wear what I want, go where I wish, and control my own business. I plan on giving this business to my two children, both girls, when I am old and gray and I am grateful that they will have the chance to do what they wish with it, as women.

I am very grateful that the women in America don't have to hide their hair, unless they CHOOSE to do so for personal or religious beliefs. For without the beauty of hair, where would I be? Internet with a Capital "I" Google Blogger Says I'm Wrong! Using the Internet to Promote Your Hair Cutting Business

I noticed when making a prior posts that Blogger spell check says that the word "internet" was mispelled! ? What? "internet, internet, internet"? It looks right to me! What is the problem? You may have noticed in my last post, that was the first time I have used the spell check. LOL! But, seriously, what's up with that??
When I finally figured out how to see suggested spellings (I had to hover over the big bad yellowed mispelled words), I looked at the suggestions and was dumbfounded. Internet is correct with a capital "I"! What? Why? Is the internet, (and yeah, I did that on purpose) a proper noun? A proper noun if you recall from your Schoolhouse Rock days, is a specific person, place or thing, like Mrs. Jones, Fifth Street, the NC School of the Arts.

But, is the internet, uh hum, I mean the Internet really a proper noun? I got out my old Merriam-Webster's Dictionary from college and found this!

Date: circa 1890: a noun that designates a particular being or thing, does not take a limiting modifier, and is usually capitalized in English-called also proper name.

I also found this:

Now, my question is this; Is the Internet really a place we go? I mean, we do go to it virtually but, it isn't physical. We can't touch it, we don't walk down it like a street; Main Street, or swim in like a lake, Lake Erie and, it sure isn't a person like Mrs. Jones. The Internet is supposed to be capitalized why? Well, it does refers to a specific thing. :0 Apparently Google Blogger is correct, for now. . .

I recently was on the Internet looking at a very high end hair salon's website. It was very nice, very appealing and hip. If your business doesn't have a website, I suggest you get one. It is a great way to market and can be as simple as adding your business to a Yahoo Local Listing, a Facebook page or a MySpace page. There are professionals that you can hire to design professional websites and even social networking site pages. If your Barbershop, Salon, Spa, or Professional Pet Grooming business is small, and you don't have the resources to pay a pro, you can easily use these free forums to advertise and market. If you are technologically challenged, never fear, most teenagers can show you how! :)

Tip for the Day: Add your business or yourself to the Internet (with a a capital "I") and watch your business grow!

The Goodness in the Internet, a Gift From a Daughter *sniff, sniff

Today, I was talking to very good friend of mine, and she said she would brb, (be right back). She exclaimed with great happiness that she had just received her Mother's Day Gift from her daughter, and it was Godiva Chocolates! Wow! I'm not talking about a box of sweets, I am talking a tower of decadent chocolates. Who could ask for more?

She could.

You see, my dear friend's daughter is thousands of miles away, in a place you don't find most twenty-something females . . . Cynthia is in Iraq. Back in April she found out she was going to stay another 5 months in Iraq. I wondered before Mother's Day, how Cynthia would get a gift to her mom.

Today, I found out the true power of the internet and I am reveling in the good of it all. My friend, who will remain nameless, was thrilled for the TOWER of chocolates but I know that she truly would have been much happier to see her daughter. The gift that SGT Cynthia purchased via the internet and sent her mom, was only a second best comparatively. Having her bright and beautiful face here would have been the best!

I sell beauty shears, grooming shears, and professional barber shears on the net at ShearsforHair.com . This is how I make my living and feed my child; who gratefully is here with me tonight. I like to think that most of my Internet browsing, checking and answering mail, receiving orders from my great customers is important. And it is! Bumpers or Silensors, Keep Your Shears Cutting & Quiet

One of the most common complaints we get from Hair Stylist, Barbers and Professional Groomers, when out in the field is "My shears are loud" or "For some reason my blades are crossing each other!" Or we hear "I lost that thingy in my shears!". That "thingy" is called a bumper or a silencer and it is common for them to dissappear for no apparent reason and they are IMPOSSIBLE to find when lost for some strange reason. LOL!

These elusive "thingies" are bumpers, also referred to as silencers, and for good reason. The bumper or the silencer are those little things that go in between the finger handles of your scissors. They are VERY important to your hair cutting shears! They keep your shears from making that clicking sound, thus the name silencer. More importantly, the bumpers keep the shears' blades properly aligned so they open and close properly, and they do not overlap. If your shear's blades overlap they will not cut hair properly, in fact, they could be dangerous as the cutting edge is exposed. With the cutting edge on the outside you could cut yourself or even worse, your clients!

Bumpers/silencers come in various forms, one is a plastic black rubber piece and the other it a hard plastic piece. We have found that the hard plastic ones fall out more easily than the black rubber ones. If you have the hard plastic type and you loose it, no worries, any shear sharpener should have a black rubber one to replace it with. It is perfectly OK for them to use the black rubber kind. Some sharpeners even have different colored bumpers/silencers for your shears. They are also usually rubber. Most Scissor Sharpeners will replace these at a nominal costs for you, some even do it for free.

If you cannot find a sharpener who will rush to your aid, you can always try doing it yourself. ShearsforHair has black rubber bumpers that we sell at a very nominal costs, and are REALLY handy to have!

Most professional salons, shops, and spas now have atleast one computer. The Swine Flu can leave your computer coughing, sputtering and yes, even lead to computer death!

Personally have received e-mails in my inbox regarding the Swine Flu Outbreak. Many are from sites I have signed up for like Web MD or About.com. Some however, are not. Do not click on links within e-mails from a source you do not know and be sure to warn every all user on your network or you could end up purchasing a new computer; all thanks to the Swine Flu.

Website names related to the words swine flu or common searches like "swine flu updates", even the medication, used to shorten the life of the flu, Tamiflu, are being purchased at alarming rates. These sites may be used to host malware, like trojan computer viruses, or for spam campaigns or phishing attacks that can fill your inbox with unwanted spam.

We are all concerned about the swine flu and unfortunantly bad people know this. Do not fall for coming phishing attempts that say things like "The Swine Flu is Now in Your City". The best source for information is the CDC's website or your local news sources.

Do not fall prey to clicking on links within e-mails

Do not open mail from unknown sources

Do not give money to anyone that promises you Tamiflu or any other Flu stopping meds

Only go to trusted sites for updates like www.CDC.gov

Maintaining your haircutting shears can save you time and money! If cared for properly hair scissors can last for years. One of the easiest things you can do to care for your shears is checking your shears' tension (and we aren't talking about your stress level here) but, we promise that doing this atleast once a week, if not everyday, can ensure that your shears keep on cutting that hair, whether you are a professional Groomer, Hairdresser, or Barber.

Hold your scissors in one hand with the tips pointing toward the ceiling.

Open one handle to a 90 degree angle (like an "L") and let it go.

The blades should close approximately 2/3 of the way (if looking at a clock the blade should fall no further than between 2 and 3 O'clock)

If they fall completely open, the tension is set too loose. This will allow the hair to fold or bend as you cut. If the tension is too tight, your blades will not fall open. Tension that is to tight, will cause to excess wear on the inside of your scissors blade and be less ergonomic for you; as you have to use more hand force and pressure to open and close your shears.

Just think of how many times you are opening and closing your shears during ONE haircut, or grooming one dog. That is truly amazing!
